Huffines Auto Dealerships hold Ceremony for Disabled Veteran

A disabled veteran received a special four-legged gift that will change his life forever.

In a ceremony hosted by Huffines Auto Dealership in Plano on July 1, Navy veteran and Garland firefighter Devon Colbert and his family were given Johnny, an 18-month-old Goldendoodle service dog.

Colbert was critically injured in a car crash in December 2012. He suffered a dislocated neck and C5 spinal cord injury that left him initially paralyzed from the neck down. After intensive physical therapy, Colbert is now able to move his waist and arms. He has limited usage in his hands.

Colbert applied for a service dog at Patriot Paws, a non-profit organization in Rockwall, in order to be less dependent on his wife, Emily, and to be able to take better care of their two young sons.

Johnny’s been in training since he was a puppy. Colbert and Johnny have spent only a few days together to review commands and get adjusted to daily family life, but now Johnny is home for good with the Colberts.

As part of the Huffines Auto Dealerships’ 90th anniversary celebration, the family owned business wanted to help a non-profit that supports our military men and women. After much research, Huffines chose Patriot Paws.
“We wanted to do something to help our veterans this week and we’re honored to assist this group that dedicates their time and resources helping so many of our veterans,” said dealership owner Ray Huffines.

Huffines donated a 2014 Jeep Patriot to Patriot Paws on the same day that Colbert and his family received their newest family member, Johnny the Goldendoodle.

The Jeep Patriot will enable the Texas non-profit to train more service dogs and transport them to a veteran in need of a helping paw. There are currently 106 Texas veterans waiting for a service dog trained by Patriot Paws.

Every mile traveled in the Jeep Patriot means a veteran is a little closer to receiving the help they need.
